Well, if this isn't a confirmation of my belief that the Silmarils harmed Morgoth.
"[...] but the Silmarils in the crown on Morgoth's head blazed forth suddenly with a radiance of white flame; and the burden of that crown and of the jewels bowed down his head, as though the world were set upon it, laden with a weigth of care, of fear, and of desire, that even the will of Morgoth could not support."
And of course, unless you want to believe that Fëanor had no connection whatsoever with the Silmarils (which is rather implausible given that he canonically put his power inside them), it's pretty obvious that the burden of the Silmarils was caused by Fëanor himself.
It also kinda supports my newer headcanon that having a Silmaril stolen actually helped Morgoth not waste away too quickly.
(For the record I was looking for info about Thuringwethil and ended up reading the above passage too.)
