It still surprises me how biased the Silm is once you re-read it and re-read it with a critical eye.

Starting with the bit about the people who turned to look back at Tirion during the flight of the Noldor being the wisest ones or something along those lines. That's absolutely not because the narrative is heavily biased in favour of the Valar and their darlings, no no, how could you possibly think that?

And then:

How the fuck is Amras' death on the ships supposed to happen if all his brothers are up and all the host is there. It makes zero sense as Tolkien wrote it, but when people try to mash it with the other version it becomes absolutely nonsensical. Let's not even think of his family. How would have NO ONE in the fucking army wondered 'hey, where's the King's youngest son' while they assembled. They were in a new place, a very dangerous place, they would have been extremely wary about anyone missing, especially one of their princes. But no, they're all really dumb.

Or the Silm is way too catholic/christian.

(Or what I think about while willy-nilly listening to the umpteenth TV rosary while I do housework...the frustration is real.)

The theme of exile is taken straight out of a prayer to the Virgin Mary which uses 'exile' as a metaphor for life outside of the true home every good man(tm) should aspire to (i.e. Heaven) - of course an exile full of suffering and sorrow, which can be assuaged by praying to the good queen.

...all of which the good Noldor in the Third Age do.

Generally, the whole kick-the-Noldor-out-of-Valinor thing is VERY reminiscent of God kicking Adam and Eve out of Eden and dooming their whole descendancy with suffering and death - it's not a coincindence that Morgoth offers the Noldor knowledge. (I'd be surprised if someone hasn't written papers about this tbh.)

Now imagine my feelings about all of this.

(I'm particularly disturbed by the fact that it's the elves that thrive on knowledge and discovery that are the ones that "fall", and how no elf of 100% Noldorin descendancy can ever be up to any good, you need Vanyarin/Telerin blood because goodness comes from blindly trusting your higher-ups. Not cool Tolkien, not cool at all.)

Well, if this isn't a confirmation of my belief that the Silmarils harmed Morgoth.

A lost joy

I'd never stopped to think about it, but the way Thingol and Díor's thought and feelings are focused on loved ones when the question of surrendering the Silmaril comes up is of course meant to make them sympathetic and to justify their choices (to the average reader, at least).

an object of obsession, and a sincere hope to reclaim it… )

Blue light

Just before things became eeeh again, I learnt that blue-spectrum light positively affects the growth of certain types of plants (and influences photosynthesis)...which can provide a reasonable explanation for why Fëanorians lamps produced blueish light - spending months in regions where the light of the Trees was probably not very strong, I think Fëanor had plenty of time to reflect on the connection between light and plant growth, and to experiment with it. In any case, I feel it fits with my headcanon that various Fëanorians were interested in plants.

Alternately, one could suppose that the lamps' light wasn't (as) blue to begin with, but that this was changed during those few years they spent in the dark in Mithrim by (either) Curufin and/or Celebrimbor.

Checking details for fic-writing purposes and I have a few remarks about the arrival of the Fëanorians in Mithrim and the Battle Under the Stars.
