I've run across a video on YouTube titled "Why Identity Politics Don't Belong in Games" or something like that, and I haven't watched it, but my curiosity wanted to read some of the comments.
And like...
I'm all for representation/diversity
VS
I don't like this mentality of "thing needs to have this, this and that in order to be acceptable".
I also don't understand why some people are so foaming at the mouth to have characters of colour in Witcher (which I don't care about either a series of book, a series of games and least of all as a TV show).
Representation to me should be: there is this place where non-white people exist, let's represent that.
Or, creating a fantasy world from scratch where people are different ethnicities etc., or women fight just because etc.
I get that Witcher grew in popularity more than anyone ever expected it to (thanks to the games, I guess) and "outgrew" its Polish folklore inspiration, in a way, but Americans should learn to Deal With It.
I mean, if I were to write fantasy based on Italy's little known folklore I would most certainly NOT make any non-white character a main protagonist, but I would most certainly have lots of dark Mediterranean characters.
Also things like "Kratos is toxic masculinity" *eyes rolling forever* I fucking hate GOW games but when I read this kind of shit I just want to start flipping tables.
Next people will be telling me that I can't enjoy GTA games because they're full to the brim of sexism and it's immoral to enjoy shooting random passers-by and playing as a criminal. LOL
I also agree with this comment, to a point (i.e. Americans in general need to relearn that "white" is NOT a culture. White people are not all American. White people have very different traditions and histories that are as worthy of preservation as anyone else's):
"He's likely an American, don't fault him for it. They have literally no concept of medieval folklore as their nation was founded by the time electricity was becoming a popular scientific theory and most of the world was in the prime of civilization. He has no concept of a homogenous nation that is so by geography as the very idea has been vilified by media and education, and seethes when other cultures and histories do not resemble the shallowness of his own"
Tl;dr Games most certainly need more diversity, but make them more like Outward, where there are white-looking, black-looking, Asian-looking people just because that's how the world is, hence there are plenty of INTERESTING non-white characters to interact with, Cyrene and Yzan being my favourites. The most important part being the interesting.
